More on the kids book. This is just a rough as the colors still need to be balanced. Mom asked that I change fonts. I don't like this one, but she does.
Pleasing the client always has it's compromises! I was just talking about this with my ex, who had to design a book cover recently. He's usually doing his own art thing and wasn't prepared completely for how hard it is to make changes you don't really agree with.
Yah, since I've only done my own thing, I've managed to avoid this so far for the most part. The stories I've heard are part of what's kept me away from seeking out a freelance art career.
It's mostly soul destroying but I find that there are occasions I am led in a different, more interesting direction than I would have gone on my own. I've learned to keep my ego out of it over the years too so, while I'm honest enough to say that something is not going to work, I'm also prepared mentally to get paid for something I know I'd never put in my portfolio.
That's a good and fair point. I've done perhaps three commissions over the years (hate doing them) and I've posted none of them as they aren't work I'm particularly proud of. But I wouldn't have thought in those directions if I hadn't taken them.
