A few updates from the last few days. Continuing on with yet another version of the rabbits, one which gives, to me, a more current day animation cartoon-show feel. The other's a monkey illo that I threw out because he was getting some attention on Tumblr. It's my favorite of the bunch so far. My work is becoming, I think more commercial which is fine. That's the experimental side of Delve Deep to me, trying to make something actually marketable. I've played with form and image in my other comics, I've pushed a lot of boundaries. While to most, making something commercial might be the first step or even the day job, to me it's something I struggle with and therefore it's more of a challenge than making something odd or visually 'challenging.' This isn't any kind of value judgement as I don't think one is inherently better than the other. There's a fine art to making something iconic, simple and loved. And again, I'm not getting any younger. If I'm going to make anything from my art, it has to be damned soon. So, these.

A few images, all from tonight. The wolf is just some Leyendecker warmup stuff. The two color rabbits were made using reference from one of my oldest influences; old pinball machine art. So yah, these.

This was just a quickie before that job thing. It's a re-draw of an earlier image. I was far too close to the original reference photo and as such, the drawings was blocky and stiff. Threw this together, free-handed some color under this and then went to work. There's something really soothing and calming about inking with the crowquill. I think it's likely the instrument that I lose track of time with the most. The brush is similar but harder to use.
