Harlon animated 3

Quickly thrown together double-take using a Yogi bear cartoon as a reference. Sped things up a bit this time around which helps. Also just found out that while I was thinking at 24 fps, DVDs show in 30 fps which messes with my head.

This year's holiday card design. I know it's highly unrealistic; you try wrapping a cat. Happy holidays to any and all that might come by this blog and thanks for looking about.

Harlon animated 2

Second try with the animation, this time using a second's worth of old HB animation as the base. I wanted to see how far I could push this or how far they did. Quite far as it turns out. Looking at various programs online, I find I like the hand drawn look over that of Flash, ToonBoom and the like. This is obviously very rough but one has to learn somehow.

harlon animated 3

Did a -very- quick and dirty attempt at animating Harlon. This is likely to be the next project when Tamino is done. I really haven't done any animation before (well, a little about 25 years ago) so this is a crude first try. Also, I was using Image Ready, which really isn't what one would want to use for web-toons, which is what I want. Still, there it is.

This is the current quartet. There's a lot going on here, I know but it shows what it needs to show. The last page is the best, I think but I wanted the reader to be lost in the painted city for the first few for a specific reason.

Saturday, November 27, 2010

Just finished this before work. It was really complex to color but worth it in the end, I think. As far as I can tell, only eight pages to go for Tamino, which means it will come in at 156 pages. A good, not so round number.

A little something I threw together. Cel vinyl on paper.

Monday, November 01, 2010

This is part of what I worked on all weekend. Top two are the front and back covers of the book I'll be taking to the convention and handing out to potential hire-ers. Second are the front and back covers to the mock up of the Tamino book. These will not be the same as the final, when I'm done with it, but there's enough good stuff in Tamino and it's some of my most recent work, so I thought it best to bring it along. Also, it might look good to have three actual books with me to show that I can see a project through.

Wow, almost two weeks since anything. Well, we had house guests and I've been working on getting things together for CTN-X, otherwise known as 'my big chance.' Heh. Not likely but without trying, there can be no success. This is a design I was asked to do for a friend of mine who has chosen the badger as her totem, or it has chosen her. Eventually, it will be a t-shirt design, likely only for her. Awaiting approval.

One more for the day. This guy thinks he looks cool. Beaver = cool. Sorta.

Free time this morning yielded this guy. He's sort of like a sack of potatoes with a huge mouth. Or a pillowcase.

Last of the beavers for awhile. Got too much else to do.

Punked out beaver #2. Oi!

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Hey, another beaver. No good reason. Punk!

Saturday, October 09, 2010

Hey, here's two beavers that came from nowhere tonight. Perhaps it was just a need to ink something or to try out two new colors of ink. Whatever. Beavers!

This is pretty much what I would want for size, proportion and costume. That is, IF I were going to continue with this which, of course, I am not.

Probably.

Quick sketch and ink with one of the initial elf designs. Have to work on the body more, get the ratios right. And I have to get back to what I'm really supposed to be doing.

Tuesday, October 05, 2010

And a quick page of potential elves. Quick sketches but what I think I want to take away from this is the general youth and androgyny of them. Also, since I bought the different colored inks, I might want to draw each race with a different color. Or not.

Another go with the dwarfs. This one is close to the description of Thorin. I was reading the part where they're toiling through the Mirkwood so thought to draw him all bent over. This was dashed out before work. Got to color him next.

Next page I'm working on. This is from a photo of an alley in Bratislava. For some reason, I'm really happy with this drawing even though it's so simple and has no central focus.

Reworked the last one in brown ink and watercolor wash just for fun. Found out the new inks are waterproof (yay) and of various opacities (boo). Still, was fun to do.

Friday, September 24, 2010

Letting myself get distracted by designing images from Tolkien's, "The Hobbit." Dwarfs! Well, Dwarves, properly. Just a bit of fun, but I could easily let myself do the whole book, had I time.

Tuesday, September 21, 2010

Found out that Speedball makes colored, acrylic inks today. Bought be a bottle of blue to try out. Seems like cool stuff! Fairly opaque and flows well. I'm betting it works with cel vinyl like a dream, or so I hope. These are just some sketches inked to see how the stuff works. Please don't stop making inks. Ever.

Thursday, September 16, 2010

Hey, post 200! Got the quartet halfway colored. Lots and lots of little windows... and whose fault is that?

EDIT: finished the rest of this today.

Monday, September 13, 2010

This is what that last entry was for. It took me a long time to get the background and foreground elements finished and inked and then scanning was a nightmare as I drew them as I did the Tamino element; on two pieces of taped together 11x14 board. This is obviously without color, and the foreground elements are hollow and hard to see. Coloring is next and is going to take a very long time.

Friday, September 03, 2010

One piece of three for the next quartet. This one will span all four pages. As such, I had to tape together two pieces of 11x14 board to make this. The two background pieces will have to be made the same way. Lots and lots of buildings. Hyooj!

Monday, August 30, 2010

Latest quartet for Tamino. A little experimental even for this comic. So near the end. Four more like this at best, I think.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Some more playing about, both with Marcus and Lucco. The Marcus drawings have no reference, they're just poses I threw together. The Lucco uses a screen grab from a cartoon I don't know with a boxing rabbit and turtle. All of this helps me learn.

Monday, August 23, 2010

Some practice Luccos and an upcoming Tamino page I liked. All the stuff I was doing with the WB copies is, I hope, showing up in my own work. That's what it's all about.

Thursday, August 19, 2010

More work on this character for no reason other than I'm starting a new sketch pad. Marcus the mopey mule is his name. His parents were punk rockers when they were in high school and want their son to be a similar rebel. Marcus really isn't interested. I think his feet could be even bigger.

More playing about with WB reference images. These two are both from a Bugs Bunny cartoon. The test is finding out how much of this works with my version of the character and what is just adding detail for the sake of detail.

Sunday, August 15, 2010

I got distracted yesterday by looking through an old sketchpad of mine. I came across some drawings I did for a friend of a mule character inspired by the rubber hose school of animation. So I thought to put together a simple Illustrator image for him and did. From there, I kept going, designing a mule character for no other reason than to do so. The later drawings were fleshed out by using Looney Tunes screen captures for reference. This is an amazing drawing tool as it gets me to think not only more about volume in my characters but forces me to translate and by doing so, has me make editorial choices about their very design. So, a couple days of distraction and fun for me.

The next quartet for Tamino. Getting very close to the end indeed.
