Started another big something today. It's one that has to be done in pieces, hopefully just two; fore and background. I'm in it. As I was in a figure mood, I did me first. This is the first, rough pass. I was hoping to not have to do a separate head but I might end up doing it anyway. So far, I like everything but the face. Then again, I haven't spent THAT much time on it yet.
The idea came from the fact that one intersection in Harvard Square has always reminded me of one in Paris as depicted by painter Gustave Caillbotte:
I took some photos when in the Square last year with this image in mind. While the angle is different, to me, this always reminded me of standing at Nini's Corner (now gone) at the corners of Mass Ave, Brattle and JFK. Though I have to flip the composition, I feel the visual connection will be obvious. So, today, I took a photo of myself in the position, more or less, of the gentleman on the right. But I appear on the left. While I will not be painting the people exactly as they are in the photo, this is more or less what I'm aiming for:

The sketch makes you look too wide and the first drawing looks much more like you do proportionally to me. I like the details, but I would, wouldn’t I? The french square was prominent in a VR exhibit we saw over the summer where you start off in the square and the painting has basically come to life. You go into one of the buildings for. “Salon” of famous artists and look at their work while they tell you about it and it goes on from there. It was interesting but the VR got a little glitchy and sometimes the entire world would suddenly shift to one side and back! I look forward to see more of this, I like when you have a complete composition with characters in a place thought I know its a lot of work!
I think the reason the sketch makes me look 'wide' is that it's more or less undefined and I am wearing a hoodie under my jacket. Right now, I think the head is too blocky. I can do better. I haven't wanted to do any of those VR things as it becomes more about a 'ride,' and less about the art. They had big ones for Van Gogh and it just seemed...tacky? Anyway, thanks for the crit!
We have been to a couple fantastic VR things but not like the VanGogh ones, these are more like the holodeck but they do have “ ride” elements like you always have to go somewhere hight and walk over a plank etc. this art one was aimed at adults and the info was interesting. The best was the Ed Wood one we saw 6 years ago, it was amazing and none of the bigger ones aimed more at the general public have come close to that experience. There were I think 6 of them this summer and that is overkill! I would never call you a blockhead but nothing really gets done on the first try without some changes… or rarely does.
