Yes, but I have hard some english speakers think it means "food server" and use it with woman too! Here in Québec, we would never call a waiter garçon, it's considered insulting to some people.
I think it's just one of those traditional things we hear in movies and most of us non-French speakers assume it means waiter. I think I'd probably use, "pardon," which I actually use all the time (French accent) for no particular reason.
If I remember correctly we used to speak german at work.. for no particular reason either... seems like "no particular reason" could be the name of our autobiographies!

Well, we spoke German because you were taking classes in it and because I had taken classes in it while at school. And here you are speaking French!
