Did this one today at work, and I think it's the most successful of my recent sketches on the iPad. Had a LOT of fun with this one. All I did was lay a photo down, put single lines for where the eyes, nose and mouth were and did everything else freehand. My coworkers are starting to ask me to do them, so I suppose that's a good sign, too.

This is a lot less, less say distorted, than the last self portrait.I don't wonder that your colleagues want one of their own!

Yah, last one was a cartoon. This one's a lot more 'realistic.' I 'cheated, in that I did a layer over a photo and made a box around where each eye was, a circle for the nose and a line for the mouth. The rest, though is all freehand. I always feel guilty about that.

I had an art teacher that said using photos as reference was ALWAYS wrong. She also wanted ZERO abstraction. Odd thing was she did abstract art herself. Since photos were invented, artists started using them as references. Sue they are a shortcut in some ways but so what? Its the final image and your effort that counts. In this day and age no one is going to sit for weeks while you paint their portrait! I would never be able to do my acrobat series without photos!
