Thanks! For what it's worth, I'm using a grid, getting in a pencil sketch, inking and coloring with the same nice, thick sumi-brush. I can easily see doing this with real paint and I might try. But it's a nice, easy process. Now I just need to push it a little further...
Nothing wrong with using a grid! Grids have been used for 100s of years. I think when working from photos a grid is essential if you ar elookingofr accuracy. I have been watching a show on great painters (a french show) and a french dubbed version of the show "civilizations" which I thought was about conquering nations but is actual about the history of art and civilization.
