Calling this one done. So easy to keep going and overwork it. A good experiment, both with me painting again and with a very limited palette (I REALLY miss blue!), it's not entirely successful but I think it was well worth doing. I could keep poking at it but I think I've taken it as far as it should go. What little spontaneity it has left will be lost. Glad I did it.

I had no idea there was no blue in this painting, the grey seem blue-ash to me - maybe because of the colours near them. This is my favourite of all your versions of this image.
Thanks! There is no blue. It's just the black and white as it's a cool black. That being said, I miss blue. While this works well for portraits (as long as there's not meant to be any clothes or props that have, say, blue or green like the grass in the BG of this one) I don't think it's a sustainable palette in general. There' controversy as to whether Zorn even used it or not.
We you used it and it worked out well so I guess if Zorn did or not doesn't change much! It's fun to restrict yourself and see what happens. I personally think limitation is what makes things interesting as it forces you to try things you never would have.
